Eco resort of the future
In collaboration with: Crystal campbel, Niharika Hariharan, Sofia Daw, Pawel Piech

“What will eco-resorts look like 2028? What types of resorts will command consumer interest? What are the main drivers of change? Will resorts become an exclusive, privilege for the elite? When resource scarcity impacts living patterns, what will and eco-resort be?”
These are just a few of the many questions that we tried to answered during the workshop in Tanzania with ARUP and developers ‘Habitaem’. We worked on developing concepts that would result in a world leading eco-resort in Mikidani, Tanzania. Our designs of the project will be used to help inform the future design of eco-resorts.
We developed a character named, Richard Champion and through him the resort reveals itself. It’s ‘a day in the life of’. While designing the story and the eco-resort we did research into: future forecasting and the many drivers of change: (social, technology, economy, environmental and politics), authenticity and African/Tanzanian architecture, sustainability and eco tourism. After this a 7 minute movie was made which was shown in Tanzania on the 11th June 2008, during the Arup workshop.
RESORT PHILOSOPHIES
Host and guest concept
The resort gives a sensory experience
The guests can enjoy local activities, such as: a welcome ritual
a night safari, diving, cooking food together and eating together
The resort has a ‘no connectivity’ philosophy
Intelligent technology in the resort
Permaculture surrounds each homestead making them energy
and food self-sufficient. This includes:
wind energy harvesting and a rain water collecting system
Food is mostly indigenous, preserving heritage crops
Eco harvesting allowing natural forest preservation
