Buitenpost

From 2010 onwards around 2000 new homes will be built in the area Veghel’s Buiten, Brabant, The Netherlands. Prior to building the houses a Land Art project will take place here. 10 different works of art will prepare visitors and passer-by’s on the changes that will take place.

With this in mind we, together with Het Fioretti College, created ‘Buitenpost’ a mobile museum for the Landscape in Brabant.

The way people experience and perceive Landscapes in different ways was the main focus of this project. What is the identity of the landscape according to de students and Veghel’s residents? For some the area will mainly be one for production, an agricultural landscape with pig stalls. Another will only see it for it’s beauty, a place to relax and enjoy nature.

With this project we started out on a large scale: what is a landscape? What different kinds of landscapes are there? After which we started focusing on their own environment. In what sort of landscape do they live in and how do they experience this landscape?
With rather non conventional questions we tried to make the students look at the landscape differently then their used to: what do you feel when you look at the landscape? What does it mean to you? What kind of identity does it have? Is it a he or a she etc.
This project has been a learning process about landscapes, experiences and the meaning of identity and with the Veghel’s history of Carnival in mind the mobile museum was created.

In order to create this mobile museum and the content for it we designed a learning programme that lasted 12 weeks that ran parallel to school work form the students of Fioretti College. 5 classes from the school were chosen to partake in this project and 5 groups were created who have worked on the content, the development, the production and programming of the museum.

Group 1: Landscape research
Group 2: Researched and created the content – the art pieces for the museum
Group 3: Helped built the museum
Group 4: Had the task to help with the programming and the promotion of the museum
Group 5: Was in charge of creating a specific menu for the museum

The Identity of this project was inspired by 'Brabants Bont'. As such the posters, cards and the design of the museum all have referances to the red and white squares.
